Every winter the town of Knife River, Minnesota, holds a raffle nobody outside the town has heard of. A new pastor starts writing the parish newsletter, and with each issue his questions get more polite and the answers get shorter.

## Parish Newsletter

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I am grateful and humbled to begin my ministry here at Knife River Lutheran. After two years as associate pastor at First Lutheran in Minneapolis, stepping into my first solo call feels like both a homecoming and an adventure. Lake Superior is beautiful in a way that makes the city seem small and hurried. Yesterday I walked down to the harbor at sunrise and watched the water move like breathing. I have never seen anything so large that was also alive.

Thank you to everyone who helped us move in last weekend. The parsonage is more spacious than anything Kari and I could afford in Minneapolis, and the wood stove in the living room will be a welcome addition once winter truly arrives. Special thanks to Einar Korhonen and the Property Committee for replacing the weather stripping on the north windows, and to Gudrun Wirkkala for the casserole that fed us for three days.

Kari sends her thanks as well, though she will remain in Minneapolis until spring. Her position at Hennepin County requires her to complete the current grant cycle, but she is already planning her visits. The distance is temporary, and I am confident that by Easter we will both be settled here together.
