The wire transfer arrived on a Tuesday morning at 9:47 a.m., which Anjali knew because she had been refreshing her bank account every eleven minutes since 6:15.
She was in the Strip Mall Office—three rooms above a Jamba Juice in Mountain View, lease signed with the bridge money from her parents—when the numbers changed. The balance went from four digits to seven. She stared at the screen long enough that it timed out, then logged back in to make sure.
The money was real.
She walked into the main room, where Brent sat cross-legged on the floor with his laptop, debugging the sensor array dashboard. Maribel was at the workbench in the back, elbow-deep in a bin controller that had started clicking.
"It's in," Anjali said.
Brent looked up. He blinked twice, which was how he processed information. "The whole thing?"
"Two point one."
Maribel set down her screwdriver. "Huh."
Brent stood, then sat back down. "Okay."
Anjali had imagined this moment differently—champagne, maybe, or at least a high-five—but what she felt was not triumph. It was the specific relief of no longer having to imagine explaining to her parents why the company had failed before it started.
"Ramen?" she said. "Tomi's?"
"Yeah," Brent said. "Let me push this commit."
