Maya watched the rain bead on the conference room window. Eighteen floors below, a ferry churned toward Bainbridge Island, white wake spreading behind it like a scar.
"Ms. Tran?"
The HR director—Carolyn something, Maya had already forgotten—tapped a manicured nail against the tablet screen. Her smile was the kind you practiced in a mirror until it looked effortless.
"Just these three fields," Carolyn said. "Then we're done."
Maya looked down at the device. The separation agreement filled the screen in a font designed to discourage reading. She'd already spent two hours with the Northwind attorney that morning, a man whose entire affect suggested he billed by the syllable. The terms were clear: twelve months' salary, continuation of benefits through year-end, and a mutual non-disparagement clause that might as well have been called a gag order.
She picked up the stylus.
"You're making the right choice," Carolyn said. "Sometimes these things just aren't a good fit, you know?"
Maya knew. Six months ago she'd sent an email to her director with a subject line that read URGENT: Retention Protocol Violation. She'd attached logs showing that user deletion requests were being rerouted to a separate archive cluster—drives that weren't covered by the standard purge cycle. She'd documented the data feeds to third-party contractors whose names appeared nowhere in Northwind's public disclosures.
